Application of PROCESS GROUP on
group leading and team building

Introduction:
Group work is one of major intervention modules of social work practice with demonstrated effectiveness in enhancing personal functioning and reducing the negative impact of environmental stressors and developmental challenges through mutual support, vicarious learning and instillation of hope. Through processing of group experiences by sharing and mutual feedback among group members, a group is effective in growing self-awareness, expanding horizon, learning new knowledge, changing attitudes and enhancing skills and sense of control in managing stress.
A group facilitator needs to deal with issues about the use of self, transferences and countertransference.

 

The facilitator will learn how to:

  1. Develop a holding environment to contain emotions of group members.

  2. Expand the capacity of group members in dealing with conflicts and critical incidents in group.

  3. Facilitating mutual aid and interpersonal learning among members in group.


Definition of process:
Nature of the relationship between interacting individuals.


Goal of process group: Maintaining close gratifying relationship with others


Objectives:

  1. Promote self-understanding on pattern of interpersonal relationship and facilitate further change or growth.

  2. Enhancing theoretical knowledge on process group

  3. Understanding role of group facilitator

  4. Developing skills and technique in group facilitation


Contents:

  1. Group activities to activate ‘here and now’ experiences spontaneity and honesty

  2. Facilitating feedback of group members with

  3. Process illumination, reflection of group process and learning of skills on group facilitation.

 

Format:

1. Participation in group activities and processing of experiences
2. Brief lecture


Number of sessions : 4 sessions with 3 hours per session


Targets : 6 – 12 social workers (team leaders or unit-in-charge)
